Speech & Language Developmental Milestones

Slide 1
Early Intervention Is Key
At Explore My Voice, we see a large number of very young children with little or no speech. We know how to provide effective and fun therapy for your toddler, and we can help you to learn techniques to facilitate your child’s speech at home.
Communication is a tricky concept, and many parents are worried about whether their toddler’s speech, language and comprehension skills are developing normally. Whilst children develop their listening and language skills at different rates, there is a general pattern to their development which can help you determine if your child has reached the right developmental milestones for their age.

A Speech Pathologist will look at different aspects of your child’s communication to evaluate how they are progressing:

• Pronunciation/Articulation -  where we focus on how your child says their speech sounds in words.

•  Language expression - focuses on what your children says and how they use words.

•  Understanding/language comprehension - focuses on how well your child understands instructions as well as language concepts.

• Fluency - focusing on how smoothly and correctly your child speaks without stuttering.

When To Call For Help?
Early intervention is always preferable. A small delay in a toddler can become a big problem once a preschooler reaches school-age and starts to read and write.
Get in contact and ask for your toddler to be assessed if:
• You are worried about your child’s language comprehension, expression and/or understanding
• You think your child’s understanding is different from other children of the same age
• Your child stutters (no matter what their age)
• Your child’s voice sounds different from other children’s e.g. it sounds hoarse
• Your child’s teacher express concern.

Preschool Screening
Slide 1
Many parents wonder if their child’s speech is at the right level for their age. Talk to your preschool director about us providing a Speech and Language screening at your child’s Preschool Centre.
It takes a maximum of 15 minutes per pre-schooler. The screener looks at how children are saying words and sounds as well as their comprehension/expression of language. Each parent receives a short report indicating if their child’s performance is what is expected for their age, or if further evaluation is recommended.
This is a great service that you are able to offer the children at your preschool centre. Please contact us to arrange a preschool screening session.

ASSESSMENTS
At Explore My Voice, we are passionate about providing a high quality, comprehensive assessment service when we meet with families. We appreciate that children are individuals with their own unique set of strengths and challenges.
Parent Interview
As parents, you know your child best! We place great emphasis on speaking with you in detail about your child’s speech and language development to date, their medical history, their milestones (e.g. crawling, sitting, walking) and most importantly, their interests.
Lots of Play
Assessments are fun! We have a massive cupboard full of toys and games. We use these toys as a basis for observing your child’s interests, their play development and their social skills. We also encourage you to bring along your child’s favourite toy or activity to increase that sense of familiarity in the session.
Language Assessment
We may use standardised assessments to explore your child’s current abilities in both their understanding of language (receptive language) and use of language (expressive language). Standardised assessments indicate how your child is developing compared to other children their age. The great part is that most of the activities are either play based or completed on a tablet which children love!
Speech Sound Assessment
We use a lot of fun, colourful pictures for this section. We listen to how your child says different sounds when saying both single words and also in conversation.
How Long is a Speech Pathology Assessment?
To gather the required information, we often recommend at least two separate sessions to complete assessments. We usually limit each session to 60-90 minutes. This ensures your child can remain engaged and we can gather the most accurate information relating to their development. All children will respond differently in an assessment, and that is ok. We are always willing to adapt our methods, timing and even resources to ensure your child has the best experience.
